Ijesa people worldwide, including at Esa Oke were thrown into mourning on Wednesday 11th September 2024, as news filtered in, of the passing of the paramount ruler of Ijesaland, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran.
The passing of the First Class paramount ruler was eventually confirmed by the Asiwaju of Ijesaland, Chief Yinka Fasoyin late on the next day.
The deceased Owa Obokun’s mother, Olori Abegbe Tinuola Adeniyi, was a scion of the Oba Adeniyi Ajakore Ko B’Ekun Se, of the Anaye Ruling House of Esa Oke Hence, the passing of the monarch threw the Adeniyi Ajakore Kore Ko B’Ekun Se dynasty in Ananye (Gogodudu) Ruling House of Esa Oke, and the Esa Oke people into mourning.
The 87 year old monarch Owa Obokun joined his ancestors after a reign of 42 years, as the foremost paramount ruler of Ijesaland. He died on 10th September 2024, after a brief illness. To mark his demise, a seven-day curfew was imposed in the six local government areas of Ijesaland, which are: Ilesa East, Ilesa West, Atakunmosa East, Atakunmosa West, Ori-Ade, and Obokun.
The Ogboni of Ipole-Ijesa, Oba Oyebade Samson Kehinde Oyeleye, who addressed the press, on behalf of the Owa-in-Council and kingmakers, announced that the curfew would run from 10 pm to 6 am daily, effective Thursday, 11th September. Additionally, all markets in the affected areas will be closed for three days.
